Scoop on the Spear-It Run

Interest continues to grow in the annual Great Spear-It Run – actually three runs in one.  This popular event gets going early in the morning on Saturday, April 28.  The three races include a fast and flat mile run, which begins at 8 a.m.; and a 5K and 5-mile run, which both begin at 8:30 a.m.  All three follow scenic courses around the downtown waterfront and end on the north seawall at Weber Point.

Sponsored by Michelob Ultra, the race is for people of all ages and skills.  Serious runners are expected to take the lead, with walkers and strollers behind.  Of course, there will be the occasional person dressed as an asparagus spear.

Registration is convenient, fast and simple.  Log on to www.asparagusfest.com, www.fleetfeetstockton.com, or www.onyourmarkevents.com. Entry fees are $30 pre-register for adults and teens or $35 onsite.  Kids 12 and under are $10 pre-register or $15 onsite.  Runners who wish to run 1-Mile and 5K or 5-Mile, add an additional $5.  Onsite registration the day of the race begins at 6:30 at Gate 1, Weber Avenue and Center Street.

The top three male and female finishers in each of nine age groups will win medals, with the six top overall male and female finishers receiving trophies.  The awards ceremony will take place following the races at the Main Stage at Weber Point.

Tower of Power Packs Powerful Energy

First of all, may I just thank our many loyal fans on Facebook for sharing and commenting regularly because it is those people who help enrich our topics and help spread the word of our Festival. We really appreciate your commitment to making our Festival that much better, year after year.

Last week we posed a question asking what band everyone is most excited about seeing this year and we got an overwhelming positive response for Tower of Power! Obviously many of you know them and have had a love for the band for quite some time; maybe dating back to the ’70′s. But let’s take it back even further. You know that recognizable brass sound from the horn section? The one that gives off the high energy that’s so hard to miss. Well, if it wasn’t for Stephen “Doc” Kupka making a good impression on Emilio Castillo’s father in 1968, he wouldn’t have joined and they might not have continued with that same great sound. Doc and his signature baritone sax carried them through the years and helped gain such the huge following even today. Tower of Power has never stopped touring and recording since they began (not just the US, but also Japan and all over Europe). Tower celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2008 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.

The local favorite will be playing with us on Sunday, April 29th at 4:30pm on the Main Stage. Admission is free with general ticket admission! For more information on Tower of Power visit TowerofPower.com.
